I am pregnant with our second child and due in just a few weeks. Because my last pregnancy was over 10 years ago and we believed we were infertile, we don't have any baby gear around at all. After 8 years of trying to get pregnant, extensive fertility treatment, etc. we had given up. Now, we are elated, but financially strapped. We've managed to conceal how truly poor we are from friends and family because we live quite simply. However, we were hoping that someone would throw us a baby shower. Instead, I am due in less than a month and have started visiting the local thrift store. The only problem is that many secondhand baby items (crib, car sear, breast pump) are very, very unsafe to use. Should I say something to my loved ones?

I thought baby showers were standard for each baby, so yes I would say something.

Or why don't you go to the salvation army? I know it sounds awful, but there is nothing shameful about it and it can't hurt to look for things (you might be pleasantly surprised).

How is it money for fertility but none for the baby? How unfair to bring a kid that you can't afford into this world. Seems there ought to be a law against it.

Maybe you should do the right, and unselfish thing and put baby up for adoption so some people of means will adopt and give the baby a good shot at a fruitful life.

You bring up a good point.

oh good lord if they can support one child and conceal their financial situation from anybody they obviously aren't so poor they need adoption. plus, that would defeat the point of a decade of trying. yes, definitely suggest it to people
