Use the tampons for ear plugs to keep the water out, being in the water won't hurt unless you do a belly flop.
the 1st few times i tried a tampon it didn't really hurt but it did feel weird n slightyly uncomfortable. I couldn't get it up tho and it was only once i had been fingered really hard by my bf that i could get a tampon up n i still had to do a lot of pushing and pulling to get it comfortable. Nowdays tho im fucking my boyfriend everyday and tampons just seem to slide straight up! Perhaps coz they are a little small than the huge cock im used to being shoved up there
