Ok, very basic question here, and please don't respond with "there is no God" blah, blah, blah...seems someone has to write this regarless of the topic.

My question is, why does the goverment allow the production of cigars and cigeretts? They want to control every aspect of our lives, do they want people to die? Is it to keep the population down and the big drug companies and hospitals in business? Nothing good comes out of smoking, we all know that. (I, myself is a former smoker, 11 yrs clean)Is it a persons "right" to kill themselves with this product? Isn't it strange that RJ Reynolds has a web-site promotig not smokng and the dangers there of?

i wouldn't go so far as to say its population control. more of money control. the government is bringing in so much money off of ciggarette taxes that they can't afford not to continue the legalization of ciggs without raising federal and state taxes for everyone.

JESUS CHRIST, MAN!
i dont smoke, never will, but .. UGH! WHY should the government control tobacco production? do you know how many people would loose their jobs, loose their lives, loose their everything if the tobacco companies went down?
if tobacco is banned- then the government might as well ban alcohol again.

smoking is a choice, we should leave it a fucking choice

RJ reynolds has an anti smoking website? are you sure? is it REAL?

I don't know how I got on their (snail-mail)list, maybe becuase I have a kid in middle school, but we recieve a packet from R.J. Reynold three or four times a year about teaching your kids the dangers of smoking. It's an informative booklet talking about opening up the doors of communication with your kids, not preaching to them but talking aout why they shouldn't start smoking, etc, etc. There is also a coupon on the back for $5.00 off a carton of Marlboro's - Only kidding! But - they also have a connection with the nicotine patch people, too.

Go to the R J Renolds official web-site and read the section on "health", they are not going to come right out and write "yes, we kill peope for a living" but they give only the under tones of the dangers of smoking. In my opinion, anyone who smokes and wants to quit smoking should be able to receive the patch, gum, anything that would help them - for free - paid for by the tabacco companies.

It is me who goes on with "There is no God, Blah, Blah, Blah.

There was no mention of God in your basic question. If God had been mentioned, I would have said, "There is no God" Blah, Blah, Blah.

I quit smoking in 1989 and I still got cancer in 2000. That is 11 years just like you. Of course I don't know how many cigarettes you smoked a day.

IF you eat enough potato salad, it'll kill ya.

If you eat enough hamburger,

it'll kill ya.

If you are around enough lead component material, i.e., pipes, paint, bullets, et cetera,

it'll kill ya.

If you live long enough,

it'll kill ya.

ALL things in moderation.

I agree with the poster who linked tabacco banning with prohibition.

This country was founded upon tabacco production. It is a multi-million dollar buisness. If people choose to smoke regardless of the warnings printed right on the label....so be it.

I smoke and wish I didn't, but i think freedom is too important, whatever it's form.

I was never a big smoker. I smoked about two packs a week. All the while loving it and hating what it was doing to me. There is nothing better tham relaxing with a cocktail and a smoke - ahhhh, I miss those days! But I don't miss the stinky cloths, the cost, the dirty looks from non-smokers.
Every now and again I get the urge, but having an additive personality, I could easily start up again if I had one now.

Knowing tabacco is full of all kinds of shit - why do we still inhale it? Knowing the damage it does to the heart, lungs, etc why do some of us truly want to do it anyway?

Most of us have control over most aspects of our lives and we pick and choose what we want and don't want - why do this to ourselves? I know I don't want to go to an early grave, if i can help it, but yet I smoked for years, trying to quit constantly but always regressing back to old behaviors of using ciggerettes as a crutch when I was upset, or happy, didn't matter, before I finally said "enough"!

All I can hope for is that my kids never do it.

I smoked 2 packs a day for 28 years. Why? I was stupid.

I started in May 1960 and quit in March 1989 when everytime I just took a puff, I got this terrible pain in my arm. I smoked a few more cigarettes with the same results and I immediately threw my last pack away and quit cold turkey.

Then in May 2000, I was diagnosed with cancer in my right lung. In January 2001 after having radiation and chemo, the
surgeon removed part of my right lung. I have been cancer free since then, but since the operation, I have been coughing every day. Actually I have been coughing since before they discovered cancer in my right lung. That's a lot of coughing.

Down with cigarettes.

Congrats to you for being cancer free since 2001. Why all the coughing though? It doesn't seem right that you'd be coughing up a storm all the time, hat do your doctors say?

The smoking culture has changed over the decades. Print & TV ads in the 50's claimed that Camel (non-filtered)ciggerettes aided in digestion and was highly recommended by doctors, and they'd have a picture of a handsome, wise doctor with a stethoscope around his neck smoking a Camel. Or what was a bettwr gift than the gift that "kept on givng" but a carton of smokes! Or a nice ash tray or lighter and case. I can remember when peole smoked everywhereZ! Grocery shopping, hospitals and always on TV. Now, thankfully, it's almost a thing of the past. Maybe this next generation will have the willpower to resist.

Thank you.

The coughing part is due to my left lung and my partial right lung being tilted instead of straight up an down due to the operation. That is the best way that I can explain it. I guess coughing beats having cancer.

I know a lady I used to work with and she had lung cancer.
She is cancer free now. After a few years, would you believe she started smoking again. Crazy!

I can top that one - a guy that worked formy dad had a tracheotomy and he smoked through the hole in his throat - doen't get sicker than that!

By the way, are you the God doesn't exist (blah, blah, blah...) guy?

Yes I am, but I believe in doctors.

I just can't find myself believing that there is an invisible man up in the skies. If there is a God and he did take care of me, then why doesn't he take care of everybody. By the way I am not ranting and raving. That is just the way I feel.

A hole through the guy's throat? That is terrible and gross.

Have you always felt this way, or was it through disappointment, prayers not answered, etc. I know alot of what I believe is from years of conditioning and a whole lot of Catholic guilt thrown in for good measure, but I still believe.

I never gave religion a serious thought, not at all. My old boss where I recently retired always tried get me to believe. She could not convince me that there is a God.

There is just too much bad going on this world.

So what are your views on death? Once you expire, that's it? There is no afterlife, no great reward, just...nothing? I'd like to think that ther is somethng more - but isn't that just lke a human, always wanting more? Never being satisfied with what we have.

I'm not a holy roller by any means. I do find comfort in religion and when my dad died, right before his death there seemed to me an energy in the room. It was all very exciting, like he was being prepared for something, a journey perhaps? I have no answers but I have many questions. None of which I'll probably receive any type of answer "from above". For now I will just keep putting one foot in front of the other and enjoy what life has to offer.

I am one to say that when your dead, your dead. I hear people say when you die you go to heaven or hell. I have a better chance believing there is a Heaven than a Hell. People say there is no pain or sickness in Heaven. If that is the case, why don't more people want to die so they can go to Heaven.

I believe we all fear (not only) death, but the unknown. There has yet to be anyone come back and tell us how great it is. I have a hard time believing people that have had "ner death" experiences. I believe they were probably so sedated or in shock from whatever happened to them. The mind can really play tricks on you. What baffles me are these people that believe in the ramblings of John Edwards, that guy who talks to teh dead. Isn't it convenient that he can turn it off and on at will?I feel bad for the people that are so desperate to believe their loved ones are okay, that they feed into this. Also like my belief in God. Yes, I feed into the hope and promise of being reunited with my loved ones that have gone before me and being in the kingdom of Heaven and seeng God. I hope there is something more than this.

We are a species of self-destructing, evil, war loving idiots. I often ask God why does he allow his "youngest lambs" the children, to be killed, to suffer horrible illnesses, to be abused at the hands of adults - why? What lesson is to be learned here? I've been told that we should not question God, to accept, etc but damn! My husband claims that God doesn't do these things, he just "allows" them to happen, to test us. Bullshit...

I don't understand when people say, "I asked God." Do they expect an answer?

Another thing I can't stand is when some major league baseball players point up to the sky as they cross the plate after hitting a home run or when a player does the sign of the cross after only hitting a single or double or triple. What is the purpose of that? If they don't get a hit, they don't do anything.

People beleive what they want. I believe in a higher power, but not a supernatural one. I don't beleive we all live this life and will recive our reward or punishment after death according to your earthly deeds.

I think it is vain and egotistical to think some awesome , supernatural being is up there somewhere with a scorecard for each and every human.

In my opinion,we are here by accident/evolution of nature like any other bug, tree or animal. No better/no worse.

I think the bible itself is somewhat of a manual showing actions and consequense. You can heed to the wisdom or ignore it. Although I do not believe in god in a traditional sense by any means, I think much can be learned from the bible.

Because the government earn a lot of money in taxation on the sale of tobacco.

Why did this thread suddenly turn into a religious discussion? I was enjoying reading about the views of smoking vs. anti-smoking.

Personally, I feel that the government can ban smoking as soon as they ban fast food and alcohol.

Of course, I probably feel that way because I smoke. Oh well.

In today's paper there was an article about New York restuants banning trans-fat cooking. That's a step in the right direction to better health.

The goverment will never ban smoking. They make too much money off of it. I quit nine years ago and every now and again still crave it. I've yet to give in because I know if I have one, I'll start again.

You know what is funny? This post #478 as post on Dec 18, 2006, over 6 years ago. How many have died from smaking in that period? What does a doctor say about coughing? "Take aspirin, get lots of rest and call me tomorrow. Thast will be $200." This is 2013.
When I quit smoking I paid $3 for a carton, 10 pkgs. Now some cost as much as $7 a pack. How do people afford it?
